Meetings are at 7 PM,  pre-pandemic were in Meeting Room A on the upper level of the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center at 220 S Gilbert St, Iowa City, IA 52240 however due to the pandemic we are meeting online through at least August 2021 with the meeting link emailed to the club a week before the meeting. November 15, 2021 - Miriam Alarcon Avila. Her website is  miriamalarconavila.com.

 
Miriam Alarcón Avila is a photographer, and a visual, multimedia, and storytelling artist. Her mission is to pursue her bliss by creatively producing strong works of art that leave a legacy for a better, sustainable, and inclusive world. She wants to inspire, connect, encourage, educate, support, and help others experience and engage with a borderless world.

In 2017, Miriam Alarcón Avila received an Iowa Arts Council grant award to develop “Luchadores Immigrants in Iowa,” a photo-documentary project that gave voice to new Iowans and shared their challenges as immigrants of Latino heritage; which has become on her personal long-term project. The exhibit, “Luchadores Immigrants in Iowa,” appeared at various universities and venues across Iowa, including the University of Iowa, Drake University, Muscatine Art Center, and St. Ambrose University, and received regional media attention.

Recipient of a mentorship award from PhotoShelter, Miriam Alarcón Avila is currently at work on several photography projects, exhibitions, and public art installations for 2021-2022.

ANONYMOUS: How To Shoot Street Photography Without Revealing Your Subjects

If you are an introvert and the simple thought of getting close to a stranger makes you sweat, or simply if it feels too sneaky or obtrusive, know that there are other ways to practice the beautiful genre of street photography without getting close to your subject. This presentation will show you ways to be more incognito on the streets while also preserving the anonymity of your subjects. Also more relevant today with necessary distancing.
